The short answer: more than 90% of UV radiation sails right through light clouds. You can absolutely get sunburned on an overcast day — and in some conditions, clouds actually make things worse.

Partially cloudy skies can amplify UV-B radiation by up to 25% through a phenomenon called cloud scattering. Sunlight bounces between cloud edges, creating UV hot spots that hit your skin from multiple angles at once.

Think of clouds as a screen door, not a wall. You can't see through them perfectly, but the invisible UV radiation has no problem getting through.

Why Clouds Don't Block UV (The 90% Problem)

UV radiation comes in two flavors that matter for your skin:

UVA makes up 95% of what reaches Earth. These long-wave rays penetrate deep into skin, cause aging, and pass through clouds and even glass windows like they're not there. UVA is fairly constant year-round, rain or shine.

UVB are the sunburn rays. They're partially filtered by clouds and the ozone layer, but enough gets through to burn you. On a lightly overcast day, over 90% of UVB still reaches the ground — while you're outside feeling cool and comfortable, thinking you're safe.

That 125% figure isn't a typo. Researchers have measured UV-B levels under broken cloud cover that exceeded clear-sky readings. The clouds act like a reflector dish, bouncing UV at your skin from multiple angles.

The Cloud Enhancement Effect

When clouds are scattered across the sky — think partly sunny, the kind of day most people consider "nice" — UV radiation can actually spike above clear-sky levels.

Researchers at the University of Southern Queensland found that partly cloudy conditions raised UV-B radiation by 25% compared to completely clear skies, with a measurable increase in DNA damage to exposed skin.

Why? Direct sunlight hits you from above while clouds to your left, right, and front reflect additional UV onto your skin from different directions. You're getting hit from multiple angles with no warming sensation to warn you.

This is why "it didn't even feel hot" is the most common thing people say after getting burned on a cloudy day.

How to Know Your Actual Risk

You can't feel UV. You can't see it. And on cloudy days, your usual cues — heat, brightness, squinting — are gone.

Three ways to know your actual risk:

1. Check the UV index, not the weather. The UV index measures UV intensity at ground level, accounting for cloud cover, ozone, elevation, and time of day. Anything 3 or above means protection is needed — even if it's gray outside.

2. Know your skin type's burn time. Fair skin (Fitzpatrick types 1–2) can burn in under 15 minutes at UV index 6–7. On a cloudy day at UV index 4, that might stretch to 25 minutes — still short enough that a lunchtime walk without protection becomes a problem.

Winter skiing or snowboarding. Cloudy winter day. Higher altitude = stronger UV. Snow reflects up to 80% of UV back at you. Clouds scattering from above. You're inside a UV oven. Goggle tan (or goggle burn) is the tell.

Same pattern every time: you felt fine, so you acted like there was no risk. Then reality caught up.

What to Actually Do About It

Protect for the UV index, not the weather:

  • Check UV before you go out. Any UV index app shows it. UV 3+ = protection matters, clouds or no clouds.
