Sun Safety Guide
Everything you need to know about UV safety and using SunUp effectively — from beginner basics to advanced techniques.
1. Getting Started
Download & Installation
- iOS: Download from the App Store (iOS 15.0 or later required)
- Android: Coming soon — Google Play
- Size: Approximately 45MB
- Permissions Required: Location (required), Notifications (recommended), Camera (optional)
Initial Setup Process
SunUp's onboarding takes 2-3 minutes and creates your personalized UV protection profile. The setup collects three key pieces of information that power all of SunUp's personalization:
Step 1: Create Your Profile
- Age range (affects UV sensitivity — children and seniors are more sensitive)
- Gender (for activity-specific recommendations)
- Location (enables accurate local UV data)
Step 2: Fitzpatrick Skin Type Assessment
This is the most important step. Your skin type determines your personalized safe exposure times.
Step 3: Activity Preferences & Notifications
- Primary outdoor activities (hiking, fishing, camping, running, etc.)
- Typical outdoor time preference (morning, afternoon, evening)
- UV peak alerts — when UV reaches your risk threshold
- Sunscreen reapplication reminders
- Activity-specific safety tips
2. Understanding UV Radiation
Ultraviolet (UV) radiation is invisible energy from the sun that can damage your skin and eyes. It operates on wavelengths shorter than visible light and reaches your skin even through clouds, glass, and light clothing. Understanding UV helps you make informed decisions about outdoor activities and protection.
Types of UV Radiation
UVA (315-400nm)
Penetrates deep into skin. Causes aging, wrinkles, and DNA damage. Passes through glass. Responsible for ~95% of UV reaching Earth.
UVB (280-315nm)
Causes sunburns. Directly damages DNA. Strongest between 10am-4pm. Blocked by glass. Responsible for most skin cancers.
UVC (100-280nm)
Mostly blocked by the ozone layer. Not a significant concern for outdoor activities under normal conditions.
UV Index Scale (WHO Standard)
Minimal protection needed. Enjoy outdoor activities freely.
Seek shade during midday. Use sunscreen SPF 30+ for extended outdoor time.
Avoid midday sun. SPF 30+. Protective hat and sunglasses required.
Minimize outdoor time 10am-4pm. SPF 50+. Full protective clothing strongly recommended.
Avoid outdoor activities midday. Maximum protection required. Serious risk within minutes for fair skin.
Factors Affecting Your UV Exposure
Time of Day
UV is strongest 10am-4pm solar time. Morning/evening UV is 50-70% lower than midday peak.
Season
UV is highest in summer months. At mid-latitudes, June UV can be 3x higher than December.
Altitude
4% increase in UV per 1,000 feet of elevation. A 10,000 ft mountain adds 40% more UV than sea level.
Reflection
Snow reflects 85% of UV. Sand 15%. Water 10%. You get UV from below as well as above.
Cloud Cover
Clouds only block 20-30% of UV. Overcast days can still cause burns — SunUp always shows real-time values.
Latitude
UV intensity increases closer to the equator. Florida has higher peak UV than Ontario, which has higher UV than Scotland.

11. Troubleshooting & FAQ
Q: Why is my UV reading different from a weather website?
A: SunUp uses your exact GPS coordinates, while weather websites often use the nearest city center. UV can vary significantly within a few miles based on altitude, local cloud cover, and surface reflectivity. SunUp's hyper-local reading is more accurate for your actual location.
Q: The app says UV is low but I still got sunburned. Why?
A: Several factors can cause this: (1) The burn may have occurred during a period of higher UV earlier in the day. (2) If you were near reflective surfaces (water, snow, sand), your effective UV exposure was higher than the direct reading. (3) Some medications significantly increase photosensitivity. Check SunUp's medication interaction tips.
Q: Why does my location need to be enabled?
A: SunUp requires location access to retrieve UV and AQI data for your exact position. Location data is used only for weather API queries and is not stored, shared, or used for any other purpose. You can manually enter a location as an alternative to GPS.
Q: The UV forecast doesn't match my expectation for a sunny day.
A: UV Index and perceived sunshine are not the same. A hazy sky can have nearly the same UV as a clear sky (clouds only block 20-30% of UV). Conversely, a cool crisp day in May can have very high UV without feeling "hot." Trust the number, not the apparent brightness.
Q: Can I use SunUp for a location other than where I am?
A: Yes — tap the location field on the dashboard and enter any city, address, or coordinates. You can plan activities for upcoming travel, check conditions for family members elsewhere, or monitor UV at remote destinations before trips.
Q: How do I report a bug or request a feature?
A: Contact the SunUp team at greg@tapegeeks.com. As a small team, we read every message and prioritize features based on user feedback.
