Find Your Fitzpatrick Skin Type
How SunUp Uses Your Skin Type
Once you set your Fitzpatrick type in SunUp, every UV calculation becomes personalized to your biology. For example, at UV Index 8: a Type I person has approximately 10-15 minutes of safe exposure. A Type II person has 15-20 minutes. A Type III person has 25-30 minutes. A Type IV person has 35-45 minutes. A Type V person has 50-60 minutes. A Type VI person has 60+ minutes. SunUp uses these calibrations to show you a personalized safe exposure time rather than a generic number — because your skin is not the same as your neighbor's.
Try it in the app:
Look at SunUp's dashboard after setting your skin type. Notice how your 'safe time' number reflects your type. Change your type temporarily to see how dramatically it changes.
Pro tip:
If you are not sure between two types, always choose the lower-numbered type (more sensitive). Over-protecting is always safer than under-protecting.
